The importance of center grinding.

Reading Time: 2min

The grinding of centers on cylindrical parts is a process often underestimated, but actually essential to ensure precision, concentricity, and final quality of the component.

Why it is so important

When a part is machined between centers, the whole geometric reference system is based precisely on the center holes. If these are not perfect, every subsequent machining operation inherits the error.

1. Geometric precision (concentricity and coaxiality)

The centers define the axis of rotation of the part.

  • If the centers are off-axis, the part will rotate “eccentrically”
  • This causes:
    • out-of-roundness errors
    • coaxiality between diameters problems
    • dimensional deviations even on very precise machines

👉 In practice: the machine may be perfect, but the part will still be wrong

2. Process repeatability

A well-ground center allows you to:

  • remove and remount the part while keeping the same axis
  • perform machining in several stages (turning, grinding, inspection)

👉 Essential in precision production and multi-step machining

3. Surface finish quality

Incorrect centers cause:

  • vibrations
  • micro-movements during rotation

Result:

  • poorer surface finish
  • possible appearance of scoring or chatter

4. Correct load distribution

The contact between tip and center must be:

  • uniform
  • with correct geometry (angle, roughness, depth)

If the center is imperfect:

  • the load is concentrated in a few points
  • tip wear increases
  • risk of seizure or deformation

5. Tool and machine life

Centers not properly ground lead to:

  • greater wear of the centers (live or rotating)
  • abnormal stress on the spindle
  • process instability

👉 Direct impact on costs and maintenance

6. Essential for precision cylindrical grinding

In grinding between centers:

  • the center is the absolute reference
  • any errors are NOT compensated, but amplified

👉 In high-precision parts (e.g. shafts, spindles, aerospace components), the quality of the center is crucial

Conclusion

Grinding the centers is not an “accessory” operation, but is:

the geometric basis on which all the precision of the part is built.
